Assignment 7

Plan 3-4 hours for this assignment. Every research project is different so it is difficult to estimate the time it will take to complete this task. If you have diligently researched and recorded your searches in the research log you will not lose points for not finding information. Some families may have so many sources to discover that this is not adequate time for all the research that could be completed. If you have concerns about timing, please contact your professor.

STEP 1: Open the FamilySearch Wiki for a place associated with the focus person in the 3-generation research project and search for birth, marriage, and death records, utilizing the information taught in this chapter and the “How to search for civil records” chart. Remember to use the research log to record the date and set goals throughout the research session. For example, a goal may be “Find the birth record of Jeremy Bean” and then each search would be logged in pursuit of that goal, making notes and documenting any analysis of the records along the way and using “NIL” if a search proves futile.

STEP 2: When the birth record is found, create a proper citation in the log and add the birth information (date and place) onto the family group record with the citation listed as the source. Not every member of the family will have vital or civil records. Perhaps the person was born before civil registration; note that in the log and move on. Keep careful track of analysis and conclusions by making notes in the log.

STEP 3: After searching for the individual’s birth, marriage, and death records, repeat the process for each member in the 3-generation research family.

STEP 4: Save an updated research log and the family group records.

STEP 5: Turn in the research log.

STEP 6: Turn in the family group records.

Looking Ahead

Assignment 8 will require two hours of searching for documents categorized as vital record substitutes.
